Erm, i am not really sure if I ever pictured myself being a lecturer in biology, but I also do not want to say i just fell into it.
I have always had a fascination with science and i think that was really made clear to me when i went to university. I knew then that i wanted to do something biology related. i have been lucky enough now to have found something i really enjoy doing and think is important.
My work is trying to make healthy plants that can grow even when they are stressed out, so that we can have enough food. So, i am happy to do what i do and hope i can make a little bit of a difference.
Not at all, actually. When I started my undergraduate studies, I didn’t even know that I wanted to be a scientist. When I started my PhD on chicken genetics, I didn’t know that I wanted to work on animal breeding later. And I presume that there are things I’ll work on in the future that I don’t know about now.
Currently I am still studying, which I guess I could have predicted because I love biology and learning new things. I have absolutely no idea what I will be doing once I finish studying and I am excited to see what happens next!
Yes but I had no certainty I would get here. I came from a city where scientific research was just not done and there were a fair few hurdles. As a foreign student, I was dependent on my parents being able to fund my studies. We are not rich so there is always an element of risk if the family circumstances change for the worse. I’m glad I took the opportunities as they arose, because I love what I do, but it was daunting at times.
