      That depends. The good thing about DNA, from a researcher’s point of view, is that it’s in every cell of the body (with only a few exceptions, like red blood cells).

      That means you can get DNA samples from cheek swabs (containing some dead cells from the inside of the mouth), blood, or even the cells left at the ends of hairs. Forensic DNA scientists use this, and specialise in doing DNA tests even very small amounts of DNA.

      However, for sampling the DNA of animals, we usually work with blood samples, tissue samples (like the ear clips from adding ear tags that farm animals wear), or plucked hairs.
